Kappa Delta comes to San Jose State College

In the fall of 1955, Kappa Delta was invited to establish a chapter at San Jose State College, San Jose California. Lillian Meilink Texdahl, Kappa South Province President, together with alumnae from Berkeley, Oakland, and San Jose, and members from Phi Chapter, interviewed girls. By the end of January, 1956, nineteen girls had been pledged, and on February 3, Second Degree was held in the Memorial Chapel at the college.

On February 4, the installation services for the 19 initiates were held in the chapel, with Mattie Ruth Gallagher, National Chapterian, as the installing officer. Members of Phi, and alumnae, assisted her.

The Sainte Claire Hotel was the place chosen for the installation banquet. Dr. John T. Wahlquist, president of San Jose State College, extended a welcome to Kappa Delta as the twelfth NPC group at San Jose State. Jackie Portland, president of the chapter, was presented with the loving cup, baby cup, and the charter.

Kappa Delta returns to San Jose State University

August 19, 1978 saw the reinstallation of Gamma Iota chapter. Delta Nu, a local sorority at San Jose State, had successfully petitioned Kappa Delta Sorority to re-establish Gamma Iota chapter. The Alpha Pledge Class included: Debbie Piosky, Chris Wittey, Karen Williams, Sue Forney, Ilene Fingerut, Peggy Carroll, Phylis Apodaca, Alice Phillips, Joan Petrelli, Wendy Wolf, Dena Dolmatz, Teri Terasaki, Tracy Corral, Barbara Offerman, Kelly Pherson and Honor Initiate Charlotte Musser (mother of National Officer and Gamma Iota member Carol Musser Coordt).

In the tradition of those who have gone before, Gamma Iota continues to pledge the finest women at SJSU. Currently members are involved in a myriad of activities including: The Order of Omega, Black Masque, AS 55 (the top 55 students in the University), Spartan Marching Band, Debate Team, Student Orientation Leaders, Homecoming Court and Panhellenic Executive Council.
